what not to do on public transportation

This post is an introduction to my next post. I thought these sort of things were common sense, but apparently not.

When you're traveling, especially to a place you've never been before, there is a tendency to be overwhelmed and to lose sense of your surroundings. So if you decide to take public transportation, especially antiquated transportation that involves being on the outside or top of a vehicle, do the sensible thing and ride on the inside.

This rule applies to the bonde (street car) in Rio that goes to Santa Teresa. It's fun, and cheap, and a totally worthwhile excursion to see that part of the city. But since you're going to want to check out the views and take pictures and be excited and not conscious of your surroundings, it is HIGHLY ADVISABLE that you ride on the inside of the bonde, instead of hanging off the sides like the locals do. You may see kids doing it, but they are locals and they have rode the bonde many times. Take my advice and sit on the inside, or wait for the next bonde to come.

You'll see why in a minute.
